In Herbert von Karajan she found a kindred soul who fostered her
international career. After Karajan's death, Mirella recalled her
first Bohème at La Scala: "Karajan, with tears
in his eyes, embraced me, saying: 'This is the second time in my
life that I weep; the first was at my mother's death'."
As an infant, Mirella shared the same wet nurse with Luciano Pavarotti,
in their home town of Modena, and she once averred: "You can
see who got all the milk!"
