Lea is starring in the new revised production of Flower Drum
Song, which opened on Broadway in October 2002. The seldom performed
Rodgers & Hammerstein
musical included many Asian stereotypes, including referring to
Chinese women as "local egg rolls." The updated book of
Flower Drum Song is credited to David Henry Hwang, the Tony
Award-winning writer of M. Butterfly. In the new reinterpretation,
the lead character, Fan Tan Fanny, is no longer a mail-order bride;
she's a refugee fleeing Communist China and the Cultural Revolution.
The most well-known song, I Enjoy Being a Girl, is set up
as a semi-feminist anthem.
