| Kaija Saariaho's first opera,
"L'Amour de lion" (Love From Afar), which had its American
premiere at the Santa Fe Opera in 2002, presents a distinctive musical
voice in a theatrical context. One leaves the performance thinking
not about the set, the story, or the characters, compelling as those
are, but hearing the echoes of this extraordinary haunting score.
For once, music is really the main event.
