| "I had told myself that
I wouldn't listen to the news today (9/11/02). I did, though, tune
into NPR during part of the New York memorial service. I listened
to the names of people, first, middle and last, the polyglot syllables
repeated stiffly, reverently by a man and a woman, while Yo Yo Ma's
fluid cello played a wandering counterpoint which strung the awkward
words together like they were poetry. Listening, I could think, or
let my mind go silent as a clear sky."
