The all-white-male Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1842, hired their first female member (a harpist) in 1997. Yet in 1994, Anne Manson became first woman to conduct at the Salzburg Festival in performance of Boris Godunov with Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1999, she was appointed as Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony.
